5 hacks for surviving the Lancastrian weather
So you wake up in the morning with the sun streaming through your blinds, a warm summer breeze, and the sweet sound of birds singing outside. Then suddenly you’re rudely awoken by reality, dreams shattered when you remember that you are in fact still in Lancaster, and yes, it’s still raining.
With the perpetual cold still creeping up on us and recent rain falling at an alarming rate, here are five tips for surviving the dreary Lancaster weather.
1. Ditch the umbrella

With recent high winds there is no wonder that a walk through town involves at least a few sightings of abandoned remains of destroyed umbrellas, all of which were destroyed at the first gust of wind.
Although the rainy winter seems to be never ending, our advice is to ditch the sodden umbrella; they’re more hassle than they are worth! Purchase a good coat with a hood and there will be no more faffing around with a broken umbrella… call it an investment!
2. Embrace the windswept look
You’ve just spent hours perfecting your hair for the latest trip to Sugar, only to turn up looking like you’ve spent the day standing in front of a wind machine – and we don’t pull it off quite like Beyoncé does in her music videos. Don’t fret however, give thanks to whoever brought back the dishevelled look and embrace the windswept style. If anyone asks, it was supposed to look like this!
3. Bring on the layers
Let’s face it, the cold doesn’t agree with all of the style icons out there who choose to ‘brave it’ in a single shirt or jumper, rather than face the inevitable cold with a sensible coat. So how can you layer up without it ‘cramping your style’? Less is more. The point isn’t to layer jumper upon jumper until you’re so hot and bulky that you can’t function, but rather add a vest under your shirt or t-shirt, or double up on tights for you girls who refuse to ditch the skirts even in minus temperature weather. Keep yourself warm and save yourself from catching that impending cold. Spend the extra pound at The Sugarhouse for the cloakroom; even as students we can stretch to a pound to keep ourselves cosy!

4. Perfect your route
To avoid being out in the open in the middle of a dreaded downpour, perfecting your route is essential. I’m sure most people have had the unlucky experience of being subjected to a beating from the heavy wind and rain on the way to a lecture, arriving at your destination looking slightly worse for wear. Plan your path beforehand, take the covered route to avoid the rain and follow the path of zigzagging students in the spine, all seeking the sheltered section to avoid arriving at lectures sopping wet.
5. Dig out the wellies!
Finally, it’s needless to say that puddles are no one’s favourite thing, and with the rate of current rainfall a pair of good shoes is in order. For all those days you get home and take off your saturated shoes, put on some fresh dry socks and hope that your feet will eventually come back to life, think twice about shoes that are likely to flood.

Nobody likes a wet pair of shoes. So, instead of chucking them in the dryer, a useful tip for when you get home is to stuff your shoes with newspaper and wrap the outside of them, securing the newspaper with elastic bands. The paper will absorb the water pretty quickly and your shoes will be ready for round two of the rain in no time!
