9 things to do in Lancaster

9 things to do in Lancaster

I don’t leave the house very often, I don’t even leave the house enough to think of a list of 10 things, and one of them is not strictly in Lancaster. However when I do leave the house I make sure it’s for a good cause. So for any Freshers wanting to discover Lancaster, or any final year students looking to make the best of their diminishing time, this guide might be worth reading. I haven’t been everywhere and I’m sure there are a lot more nice places in town and I cannot even begin to rank these very different places. But these are the places which have continually got me out the house, which is some achievement at the very least. Nearly all will do student/Purple offers in some way so make sure you plan ahead to save your much treasured dough as well.

Lazer Quest

This may not be Lancaster but hop on a 3 or a 4 going the Morecambe direction, contain your excitement long enough and you will arrive at has been many people’s childhood highlights, Lazer quest. Ok maybe just me then but no university year should be completed without running around like a nutter in this nostalgic sweat-fest as you try and get all your restrained anger out against your house mates that might just have picked up a few annoying traits over the course of the year. Set inside an old-fashioned arcade, it would do any students good to spend an afternoon firing lazers at each other and forgetting about looming coursework deadlines and exams. You’ll probably have worn fancy dress enough while at Uni, so this is another childhood fantasy which should not remain a memory.

Teatro

If you like your meat, then you’ll love Teatro because they’ve got meat and lots of it. Located on Church Street Teatro has great purple card offers and a plentiful supply of various meats to leave you rolling out of the restaurant, I speak from personal experience. In true Brazilian fashion the meat is cut onto your plate and as you devour your last portion of meaty goodness. This is a unique experience but one you won’t regret, apart from maybe when you try and walk afterwards.

Soupanova

There is no place in Lancaster at all like Soupanova, in fact I’ve never been to a place like Soupanova and it’s a great shame. Just a few doors down from Go Burrito on Church Street Soupanova offers, as you would imagine, high-quality fresh soups which differ everyday but also a range of sandwiches and snacks which can fill up any peckish student. This would be the perfect pick-me-up, in the coming months, as the Lancaster weather begins to revert to its windy self. The fresh, original food served in a unique setting is the perfect antithesis to the fast food chains which continue to crop up everywhere at alarming rates.

Go Burrito

Whenever I think of this place, my tummy rumbles, my mouth salivates and I can hear myself going mmmmmm. Go Burrito is for anyone that enjoys quality, original food in a chilled-out atmosphere. Go there and go there a lot. There are generous helpings of freshly made food which complement each other perfectly. They challenge you to sink the Titanic, a 6lb 3ft long burrito, which is too much goodness for me and not for the faint-hearted. They also offer a killer purple card deal which is £11.95 for two medium burritos and nachos. Perfect for any buddings Romeo or Juliets on a budget.

Williamson Park

[Image unavailable - this media was lost during migration]

This is the hidden gem of Lancaster city. Way out of town and up a steep and, for irregular exercisers like myself, challenging hill Williamson Park is a fantastically well-maintained and rather beautiful park. It’s undulating paths take you all around the park which stretches to 54 acres. As well as that the Ashton Memorial, known round here as the ‘Taj Mahal of the North’ is a beautiful monument which provides a gorgeous view of Lancaster and Morecambe Bay. It looks picturesque at winter and also, in conjunction with the Dukes, puts on open-air plays, which have recently included Robin Hood, Lord of the Rings and the Wizard of Oz in the summer, so you should definitely afford yourself more than one trip here. The effort gone into making this diverse park an enjoyable experience for all ages means that you will want to keep coming back all year round.

White Cross

Only a short breaststroke up the canal is the White Cross pub, which like the Waterwitch offers a peaceful drink by the rather nice-looking but suspiciously murky canal. They dub themselves the ‘Lancaster’s Mecca of Cask Ale’ on their website, which I guess is for the quality and quantity of their ale, as opposed to having any connection to the Holy City of Saudi Arabia which forbids the entrance of non-Muslims. The food here is also great, offering plentiful portions. With two pubs so close to one another offering a similar experience, it may be easy to pick a side, but I want to say why bother?! Two times the food, drink and quizzes is twice the fun, right?

The Waterwitch

If you ever get bored of the college bars, more discerning drinkers might want to see what Lancaster town has to offer in the way of watering holes. And the Waterwitch is one of the nicest you will come across. Located on Lancaster canal, behind the hospital, before you get enter the city centre, you get a peaceful scene should you choose to drink outside and you can admire the many canal boats and their eccentric captains that sail past. But inside they also have a vintage setting, nailed down to a tee and a wide selection of high-quality ales and food, which will soon make you a regular down by the canal.

Bar 1725

[Image unavailable - this media was lost during migration]

There’s going to be a lot of eateries on this list and each one is special in its very own way. Located in the centre of town, hidden away in a subtle stone building, 1725 offers a wide selection of Tapas. Perfect for any student that wants to stuff their face with different kinds of quality food. With the menu divided up into vegetarian, seafood and meat there should be something for everyone. With plenty on offer to take advantage a visit to one of the only Tapas bars in town should be must at least once this year when eating out. And remember sharing is optional.

Dukes Playhouse

If you want to watch a good film, a theatre production or just fancy a cup of warm coffee then the Dukes is definitely worth popping into. The theatre productions, can be whacky, thought-provoking and rather great. The films may often been on later than at other places, but the Dukes offers a serene atmosphere to watch a genuinely good film with much cheaper prices(£5.00 for Students). They’ve even invented a way to eat your crisps rustle-free while watching a film. It would be a crime if such ingenuity was not to be rewarded.
