Cheap Valentine's gifts

Cheap Valentine's gifts

The most romantic day of the year is nearly upon us, and if you're lucky you might have a real, actual person to spend it with. Score! Sadly, you might be deeply in love, but you're probably even more deeply into your overdraft. That perfect, romantic Valentine's Day with your significant other might be financially out of reach- right? Wrong! There are still ways to show someone you care, even without much (or any) money…

Make them a mixtape

Pretend it's 1995 (and by that, we don't mean "wear a nappy and puke aggressively") by choosing some romantic songs and putting them together on a tape (although a Spotify playlist would work just as well). As long as you steer clear of Bieber, this is guaranteed to put a smile on someone's face.

Write them a song

Bring out your inner Bruno Mars and write a song for your loved one. If you can't play any instruments then improvise with pots and pans from your kitchen. If you can sing more than two notes in tune and your partner's name rhymes with a lot of things then you're in luck!

… in fact, write them anything

If you're skint, then some romantic words are the best gift you have. A letter or a handmade card to your partner is a great idea. A drunken Facebook message to your ex or a 15 page declaration of undying love to someone you've been on one date with? Not so much.

Make them a sock puppet

Get a sock (preferably a clean one) and some googly eyes and you're good to go.

Take them for a romantic meal (at McDonald's)

Bonus points if you let them have the last chip.

Watch Jeremy Kyle with them

It doesn't matter if you couldn't afford a diamond necklace or a romantic weekend away- give your partner the gift of knowing that things could be much worse. If you aren't cheating on your partner with a member of their family then give yourself a pat on the back.

Be less annoying than usual

Drop all of your worst habits for the day- whether that's never doing the dishes, constantly humming, being late for dates or eating with your mouth open. This is a great option as it involves no money, no talent and no effort.

Share the duvet more fairly than usual

Nothing says "I love you" like letting your partner have 30% of the duvet instead of the usual 20%.

Give them air from your lungs

If all else fails, try this. If it worked for the ninth Doctor, it might just work for you.
