The 10 best fictional mothers
Happy Mother's Day!
Mothers are wonderful people, they’re kind, caring and can usually cook beautiful dishes that make our Friday night kebab look and taste like regurgitated dog food. That’s why we have a whole day to celebrate our favourite ladies with flowers, chocolate and food which we actually cook (although burnt Sainsbury’s basic pizza with a side of microwavable noodles never seems like a good idea).
Mums are great – mine is my favourite person in the world – and whilst there are a few wicked stepmothers and psychopaths thrown in the world of fictional mothers, there are also some very lovely ones. So here are my top ten fictional mothers, and yes one is an ape and one is a yellow cartoon who hasn’t aged a day in 25 years, but we don’t discriminate here, motherly love is motherly love.
Maria Von Trapp from The Sound of Music
Technically, she didn’t give birth to any of the Von Trapp kids, but we all remember welling up when Liesl says "Frauline Maria, I mean Mother". Maria basically gives up her entire life to be with Captain Von Trapp knowing full well seven singing kids (with slight Daddy issues) came with the deal. But she took them in and loved them as her own. Beautiful, strong and caring – Maria is definitely one of my all-time favourite things, I mean Mums!

Jill Taylor from Home Improvement
For children of the 90s we all affectionately remember Jill Taylor, with three rambunctious boys and Tim "the tool man" Taylor as her husband, she does wonders just keeping everyone sane. She also took the brave decision to go back to school and balance work, motherhood and stopping Tim from blowing up the house, all with biting wit and a killer perm!

Donna Sheridan from Mamma Mia!
Meryl Streep doing the splits whilst singing Abba and having three gorgeous men after her – need I say more? Ok, perhaps she has slightly questionable morals but at the end of the day she puts her past behind her and supports her daughter Sophie’s decision to find her father. Plus she still gets hammered and sings karaoke with her friends – never too old to have fun, an important lesson all Mums should teach!

Morticia Addams from The Addams Family
The poster Mum for "being yourself", she is a wonderful blend of eccentric, macabre and loving. There’s nothing typical about the Addams family and she encourages her children to embrace it and not give a hoot about others’ opinions. Morticia also tells it how it is resulting in surprisingly well-adjusted and unbiased kids!

Lynette Scavo from Desperate Housewives
Whilst you can’t really call any of the DHW ladies stable, Lynette is the closest thing to sane you will see on Wisteria Lane. Firstly she has six kids, and they are all relatively normal – that itself deserves a medal! This Mum will do anything for her family, supporting and loving them all and ultimately working through everything to save her marriage and keep the family together.

Marge Simpson from The Simpsons
The epitome of a dysfunctional family, Marge deserves a medal just for keeping them all alive, let alone happy! Marge is also perhaps the epitome of a long-suffering wife with three nightmare-children and a ridiculous husband. However she takes this in her stride whilst rocking a blue beehive and is the glue that holds everyone’s favourite cartoon family together!

Judy Geller from Friends
If you’re Ross she’s the best Mum ever, she’s kept all your old certificates, turned your room into a shrine and seems fairly calm about the many marriages that get progressively shorter. If you’re Monica, she’s probably not so great. After all, the phrase "pulling a Monica" refers to momentously cocking something up! Frankly she’s hilarious and apart from inadvertently insulting Monica she’s generally brilliant!

Helen Parr AKA Elastigirl from Disney Pixar’s The Incredibles
Super hero, super mum! This lady is resourceful and quick-witted and her greatest achievement is keeping her quirky family in one piece. She protects her family at all costs; do not mess with The Incredibles, this Mum is literally indestructible!

Mary Cooper from The Big Bang Theory
As a born again Christian with a habit of saying the most non-PC things you could think of (she’s worse than your Grandma, seriously), Mary has her hands full with her eccentric son Sheldon. Some cracking Mrs Cooper lines include "I thought it was our Indians that had the occasional drinking problem" and asking Penny if she was single because "she was getting them to ride the rollercoaster without buying a ticket!" All this aside she’s the only person who can truly control Sheldon and accepts and loves him for all his craziness – she did have him tested!

Kala from Disney’s Tarzan
Tell me you didn’t well up just a little when baby Tarzan fell asleep in Kala the ape’s arms after she found him in the wrecked cabin where his parents had just been slain. Although she risked being abandoned by her husband and tribe who didn’t want a human with them, she took the orphan in and raised him as her own. That is one brave ape and one cool mama!
